Gregory Smith
Review for Organization for Autism Research, Arlington, VA, USA
My name is Greg Smith, a member of the Organization for Autism Research (OAR) Board of Directors and the parent of a child with autism. I am pleased that I have an opportunity to talk about OAR. I have been involved with OAR for almost 10 years and in that time, my understanding and appreciation for what the organization does has grown every year. I have met with parents that were initially confused and angry about their situation. OAR has provided a wealth of information on this disability to educate these parents about what they are dealing with and where they can get help. In most cases, this information has served to open the eyes of the parents and prepare them for what lays ahead. In place of these parents feeling alone and no one understanding their situation, now, there is a common understanding that there is hope and assistance. In addition to the parents, OAR is a resource for teachers and caregivers; a resource that is there to shed light on a very difficult and confusing condition. So, it is a resource for the greater community providing assistance. This assistance is provided in a variety of ways, but my personal favorites are the free publications and websites. OAR is there to help the community move forward in dealing with this disability.
