Review for Women's Intercultural Center Inc, Anthony, NM, USA

Rating: 5 stars

I went on a trip with my college to learn more about the U.S./Mexico border and the issues surrounding it. While in the New Mexico/Texas region, the Women's Intercultural Center was nice enough to host us and share with us their experience of the border. While there we were accomodated to food and housing as well as many fun outings and informational tours. We were also able to stay a few nights with some of the women from the center in order to get a more personalized experience, which was my favorite part. I learned alot about what the center does for the women (and men!) who come to the center and the opportunities they provide for the women to learn, be creative, and be self-supporting. The women I encountered were strong and independent and excited about all the center had done for them and their family. The staff was knowledgable, curteous, and fun while sharing with us a personal perspective to the issues of immigration and culture which we came to learn about.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the increase in my openmindedness and desire to learn more about other communities and spreading the word about the communities surrounding the U.S./Mexico Border. I have already spoken on a panel about my experiences with the women cooking, talking, and being within their community.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

have more interaction with the women of the center on the BAEs. Some of the costs for meals were unclear when we signed up for the trip. It wasn't a problem, but I would've liked to know these extra expenses for outside food before going. Having the students fill out feedback of our experiences with the host families might help them find which families work best. Also, some women I talked to seemed very interested in hosting students and didn't know about it; advertise it more for the women in the center.

Role:  Volunteer & I learned about issues of immigration, human rights, citizenship, farmwork, and the community in Anthony.
