Review for American Cancer Society Foundation, Atlanta, GA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

The American Cancer Society helps bring local communities together in an effort to give people a way to "Celebrate, Remember, and Fight Back" against cancer. At Relay For Life events across the country, ACS provides information to raise cancer awareness and funds for cancer research. Participants and visitors find a place they can get answers about all types of cancer, celebrate their survivorship or that of a friend or family member, remember a lost loved one in a safe environment, and even learn about ways to fight back against this terrible disease. For my own personal involvement, ACS and the Relay For Life in my community gave me a way to honor the memory of my dad who passed away from lymphomia when I was just 15 years old. This past year, it helped our community grieve the loss of a beloved teacher and friend. I have made life-long friends from my work with ACS and Relay For Life, and it gives me a safe outlet for the emotional rollercoaster that cancer can become. It is such an amazing organization, and I feel so very lucky and empowered to help the ACS fight the battle against cancer.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the way it helps cancer patients by providing rides to treatments or a place to stay for entire families during treatments far away from home at Hope Lodge.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

keep funding research so that we can find a cure to cancer or dramatically reduce the number of deaths due to cancer in our country.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing the number of survivors grow each year. We may not have a cure for cancer yet, but we have better treatments and more options thanks to the work of thousands of volunteers at the ACS like me.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

PASSIONATE!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

build more Hope Lodges for families that need treatment far away from home. See Hope Lodge in Michigan really moved me, and I'd love to see more options for families like that all across the country.

Ways to make it better...

we could finally say that all of our research efforts have found a cure for cancer!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the economy and getting people to donate money during tight economic times.

One thing I'd also say is that...

every organization has its ups and downs, but ACS is able to help people find hope, celebrate survivors, remember lost ones, and fight back. Above all the money raised, it is pretty amazing to help people in my community in that way!

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?

2009
