Review for Camp Unalayee Association, Palo Alto, CA, USA

Rating: 5 stars

Camp Unalayee is a life changing experience. Such a wonderful place for kids to experience the beautiful wilderness of Northern California with all its ecological diversity. Camp is a wonderful social space as well, encouraging lifelong friendships. And they are generous to low SES campers and their families as well. (Full disclosure: camper for 4 years, staff for 11!)

As a camper and then counselor at Unalayee, I saw it change many lives including my own. Camp gives kids the chance to really immerse themselves in the wilderness in a safe and fun way, and especially kids who otherwise would never have had that chance.

Many of my best experiences happened with Camp U. But besides my selfish interests it does great things for underprivileged kids. Nature is the best medicine and Unalayee is the best place for kids to get it.

I went as a kid and couldn't stop going back. Then I worked there because I had to go back! Camp Unalayee does great things for kids, teaching them confidence, self-sufficiency, social interaction, and about the beauty of the wilderness. It gets kids from the city who would never get out there to experience the wild. Through camper-ships it helps less well-off kids have the most awesome summer camp experience.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The lives of campers later on, their great works in the world, and their happiness and self confidence. Also in my own life, the physical and mental challenges met at Camp Unalayee have greatly strengthened me.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Help the director get more of his fundraising and publicity goals met.

Role:  Volunteer & I was a camper and camp counselor.
