Review for Housing Opportunities and Maintenance for the Elderly, Chicago, IL, USA

Rating: 5 stars

H.O.M.E. is the only agency in the City of Chicago that is dedicated to providing programing to assist the inner-city elderly to "Age with Dignity". H.O.M.E.'s program and dedicated staff help seniors remain independent and active members of their community. Citywide support services include: Upkeep and Repair Services, Free Shopping tranportation services, intergenerational housing and volunteer services. As the population continues to age, the needs of this population will continue to grow.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

providing transporation to seniors to grocery stores and drug stores in underserved areas of the city. Senior have a safe mode of transporation and an activity to get them out into the community and out of their isolation.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

continue to expand the board of directors with corporate executive membership and to initiate a "Women's Board" to coordinate fund raising and donor cultivation.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The dedication of the staff, the board & the appreciation of the clients. The clients have been hard working members of society, trying to live on social security and barely making ends meet. The joy of seeing the appreciation in their faces is priceless.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The staff is extremely dedicated to the mission.. The volunteers, especially the younger groups, bring so much energy and enthusiasm to the programs. The time spent with the seniors is valuable for both volunteer and client.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Expand all of the programs especially the intergenerational living. As the senior population grows, these type of independent living arrangements will greatly improve seniors quality of life.

Ways to make it better...

H.O.M.E. had the resources to serve more inner city elderly.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

fundraising and marketing and communication. Culturally, the US has not been a leader in honoring the elderly, therefore, the social responsibility toward the elderly are not as prominent in our society.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Dignity is defined as the "quality of being worthy, honored or esteemed." H.O.M.E.'s mission is to provide that sense of being to the inner city elderly of Chicago through its programs.

When was your last experience with this nonprofit?
