Review for Northwest Family Services, Portland, OR, USA
My husband, Joe, and I became part of NWFS's Mentoring Program in June 2022. I work at a local elementary school and was introduced to Children of Incarcerated Parents, where I learned about the mentoring program. The chance to support my students as they navigated middle school and beyond was a calling I couldn't resist.
Joe was paired with a boy, and I was matched with two girls who are best friends. This journey, alongside our role as foster parents, has been incredibly valuable. We've seen them graduate from middle school, settle into high school, and even join sports teams – experiences that have shaped them positively.
From pottery painting to visits to the Bigfoot Museum, our monthly activities have been full of joy. One summer day at the beach, while boogie boarding, Joe's mentee yelled from the water, 'This is literally the funnest thing I have ever done! Thank you so much for bringing me!!'
This group's work supporting our more at-risk kids through positive role models and unique experiences has been life-changing for us all.
