I am both a lender and a volunteer editor of loan profiles. I really like the Kiva "business model." They do not ask for donations, they ask for loans that are gradually repaid. Kiva reaches thousands of hardworking people in all corners of the globe who would otherwise never have access to traditional banking systems, so they fill a true void.

With Kiva, you can browse through the loan requests and, with as little as $25, choose an individual or a cause you really believe in, whether it's a college education or a sanitary toilet. I enjoy seeing the photo of the borrower and knowing exactly how my loan will be used.
