Review for A Touch of Understanding Inc, Granite Bay, CA, USA
Doing outreach for people who have disabilities is such important work, that not only does it show the general public, but also the next generation in what they can do to help or even what to expect when they encounter a person with a disability. It is fundamental for people in general, as well as children, so they can get away from the normal stereotypes that people still rely on…not everyone but some do. ATOU is one of these great nonprofits that helps break down the barriers between those who have disabilities, and it allows children to do hands-on activities as well as ask questions to those who volunteer who have disabilities. ATOU has touched so many children’s lives. They’ve gotten so much good feedback from several schools that they go to and teach at. ATOU is a wonderful nonprofit, and I wish it was around when I was in public elementary school. I was the only disabled child in my school, and the other children didn’t know how to really interact with me. They just kind of left me alone. However, ATOU breaks those barriers and allows kids to see that there’s not much difference from them to one with the disability. We may do things differently, but we are the same no matter what. Students learn we are people…we are humans.
