A category five ice storm left my bookstore in Northern Michigan without power for seven days, and most of my employees without power for two weeks. The tree, powerline and electrical grid damage was (and remains) catastrophic. The governor declared a state of emergency, though aside from bringing in teams of linemen from neighboring states, little fiscal assistance has been forthcoming, and the disaster either forgotten or unknown by even the rest of our state. Because of the damage to power grids, when electricity was restored, the massive surges overwhelmed many systems, causing further electric damage to equipment within homes and businesses. I wasn't sure that this seven-day loss of business during our very quietest time of the year was even something with which BINC might assist. But I reached out on a whim and immediately received a reply from Judey, thanking me for reaching out and confirming that BINC could help. They did, with ease and record time and alleviated two months of rent for the business, which is a major relief both financially and mentally.
