We are so grateful for ExpressIt! The interdisciplinary project we did between Spanish and Art was researching a youth Latinx activist and making a collage about that person. A key aspect of the project was for the kids to reflect on the things they really care about and seeing what they had in common with their subject and how their subject expressed those things in their life. So, we used the book to help facilitate those reflections throughout the project. The students found the book challenging, at times, and delightful at others (sometimes at the same time!). The process of stepping out of themselves and looking back as objectively as possible, and then sharing with their classmates, was a really important process for them to experience. And the opportunity to freely express themselves, in ways from queerness to weirdness, was extremely validating for them. Thank you so much!
