Over fifteen years ago one of my students approached me with the idea of starting a nonprofit that would make a difference in the country, Burkina Faso, he came from. I agreed to be on his board and help with getting the organization started. Most college students are focused on their social life and finishing their degree so they can enter the job market. In addition to getting his degree, Alfred's focus was making a difference in the lives of others. So Feeding Nations Through Education (FNTE) was born.

FNTE almost immediately got projects going in Burkina Faso. Before Alfred graduated college, fundraising had begun and investments in Burkina Faso were being made. The initial projects involved improving farming by providing oxen and plows to families, getting children into school, and providing wells for clean water. Over time micro loans for women were added and a middle school was built (including dorms and a medical center).

FNTE is an organization where all the funds raised go into projects on the ground. In addition, a majority of the projects have a pay it forward component. Currently, almost 400 families have a pair of oxen to help increase food production for the family and create the opportunity to sell part of their crops. There are over 1700 women owned businesses started through the micro loan program, the majority of them through pay it forward. Seventeen water wells have been drilled providing clean water to over 150,000 people. The school currently has almost 1500 students enrolled. All of this because one person wanted to make a difference.

FNTE is an organization that is worthy of our support, both money and time. I would encourage both individuals and other organizations to consider joining the FNTE team through your donations, they will make a difference.
