I had concerns about the externship program at the Center for Animal Research and Education. Externs are required to climb an extended tractor arm, approximately 10 feet high, to throw meat into enclosures, which raises safety concerns. Additionally, work hours are not properly tracked, and externs are expected to work 7 days a week with shifts lasting 10-12 hours. There also seemed to be a lack of necessary supplies to perform tasks efficiently. While the mission of animal care is commendable, I believe improvements in safety protocols, proper scheduling, and adequate equipment would greatly benefit both the externs and the organization.
