When I first moved to Fredericksburg I discovered Virginia Organizing. They were doing projects which directly helped local people. Often it was groups that had uphill climbs because the challenges were to people in working snd overlooked positions, or groups that needed structure for their voices to be heard. Then I discovered that it had a statewide effort on bigger issues which required more planning or legislative action. The people who volunteer are from all social, economic, racial, age and cultural groups. The local and statewide work is what interested me because it gets things done, instead of just handwringing.
