My wife first saw a post on Facebook about DOD in early 2023. I was intrigued by this having never heard of DOD before. I went to the website and liked what I saw, especially all the pets in need. I talked it over with my wife and she agreed that we should try to recruit a pet dog. I filled out the profile and after a search we found Duke. He was an older short haired male dog which fit our interests. We have no pets of our own but had watched my sister-in-law's beagle the previous two winters for 3-4 months each time. I contacted Duke's owner and agreed to a meet and greet. I drove the 6 hours from Erie county PA to Arlington, VA to meet Duke and his owner. (My son lives in Arlington and it gave me a chance to visit him too). We met at the Iwo Jima Marine Corps Memorial. Duke came running to me when I saw them walking towards me in the park. His owner released the leash and he came right up to me and got between my legs. I bent over and rubbed his chest and petted him. His owner said she be st seen him take to anyone like that before. The meet and greet went well. So three weeks later my wife and I headed back down to Arlington. We got to see my son and daughter-in-law plus meet Duke and his owner. We transferred Duke's things to our van and with tearful globe's exchanged as headed for home. Duke loves car rides and he handled the 6 hour drive like a champ. We got home and Duke settled in very quickly. He has been a great companion and perfect fit for us and our lifestyle. We have come to love Duke and it's obvious that he loves us. He has been with us for 18 months now with four more to go on his deployment. It will be hard to give him up. He has made a priceless impact on our lives. We will treasure the memories we made with Duke forever. Plus we have made new friends with Duke's owner and the owner's mother. Dogs on Deployment is a great blessing to us and I highly recommend this program to anyone who loves dogs/cats and our nation's military members.
