I'm really glad I had a chance to volunteer with Uptown Stories - the environment is incredibly friendly and supportive, with plenty of guidance that helped me perform my tasks to the fullest of my ability. Volunteering allowed me to build upon existing skills of mine, such as print layout and copyediting, but I also had the chance to learn new skills, like the basics of grantwriting, which are of incredible value and were taught to me in an easy-to-understand way. I also resonate with the organization's overall mission, of empowering young people to tell their own stories. If there had been a program like Uptown Stories in my area when I was a child, I feel like I would've immensely enjoyed it and been able to build further confidence in my writing. Their anthologies are definitely one of the most special aspects of their program and I can imagine it gives the students so much pride to see their work in a published book, especially if they show up in repeat editions from returning to take even more classes with Uptown Stories. The team is very passionate about the work they do and I love being in an environment like that, with clear drive and passion to meet this mission. Would absolutely recommend for volunteers who are interested in helping out our cause, or parents who are interested in nurturing their children's creative spirit!
