Review for Northwest Family Services, Portland, OR, USA
One of our adolescent clients had been regularly engaging in risky behavior associated with her substance use. This was one of the ways her trauma manifested itself into her daily existence. For her, it was a coping mechanism, how she demonstrated her pain, and a way to ask for help.
She had ended up in the hospital on multiple occasions, participated in In-Patient Treatment in the past, and attempted suicide multiple times. She was doubtful anything would change with treatment this time around. After three months of consistent Outpatient Services, she completed services.
By the end of treatment, she was re-inventing herself, listening to new music, trying out new clothing styles, got a job, became a bookworm with an interest in Theology and dark romance novels, pulled herself away from drama at school, and significantly decreased her substance use; as well as the risky behaviors associated with it.
Her story is demonstrative that extra support can make a big impact, and I am so glad we could be a part of that support for her.
