One of my clients quit vaping shortly after the school year. She used nicotine patches to achieve her goal and is now completely nicotine free. This youth has struggled with intense cravings all summer yet she has still been firm in her decision to quit. When asked the question, “do you think you are strong enough right now to say no when you are offered a vape once school starts?” This youth had enough self-awareness to say “no” and ask for help with this. With my support, this youth sat down and set detailed boundaries for herself. She created a pros and cons list and made commitments to what she would do if she did decide to say yes, including meeting with a counselor again. This youth is impressive because she knows she is going to be faced with opportunities that could impede her sobriety yet has decided to take steps to prevent that from happening.
