After we lost the last of our four-legged family, the Sassy cat at 19 1/2 years old, I had thought about doing volunteer work with cats somewhere. It would be beneficial for both the cats and for me, since I have love and care to give, and cats seem to like spending time with me. Given our busy lives, though, I didn't get around to it. Then I found out Almost Home Cat Rescue had opened to the public while reading an article about them in a local news site. My wife and I stopped in one Sunday open house. Rambunctious black cat Earnest and shy calico Maxine were there in the community room, and Stephen was the volunteer staffing the open house. Both my wife and I were very impressed with how well-set up and clean the entire shelter was kept, and we chatted with Stephen, who as a founder of Almost Home, could tell us all about the place and the organization. I kept coming back for visits during open house, and realized that Almost Home was the place I wanted to volunteer. Every volunteer there goes through training and supervised shadowing before taking on their own shifts. I've now seen Almost Home from both sides - visitor and volunteer - and I can say that it's always a place I look forward to going to. They are totally committed to caring for cats and kittens and finding them forever homes!
