Review for Snowbird Outfitters Inc, Andrews, NC, USA
I was a camper at Snowbird in Summer 2001, 2003, and 2004. Here I learned what it truly meant to be a follower of Jesus Christ. The teachings, worship, and community all helped me better understand the character of Christ and the love He lavishes on His creation.
As a camper, I remember the staff were genuine and authentic in their relationships. There were no noticeable factions or dissensions amongst themselves. This community is what in large part lead me to work here throughout my 4 summers in college. While I was on summer staff, I learned that it was truly mercy, not sacrifice, that compelled Snowbird to serve the hearts of middle school and high school kids.
Snowbird uses it's outdoor activities as a platform to minister the Gospel to a range of adolescents in the South East United States. One of my most rewarding experiences working at camp was being able to work with the boys from Eagle Ranch, a group home in Atlanta, GA. These students come from broken families and other hardships. Most of the boys did not want to hang out or talk, and they were very put off by me. Until mid way through the week, the staff working with Eagle Ranch played paint ball against the boys. This time of fun and fellowship really opened the doors for communication and quality time. I began to see the walls come down and I was able to have meaningful conversations with boys whom I thought never would speak with me. From their personal stories, it was evident a lot of healing and reconciliation needed to happen in their relationships, particularly their families. During the rest of the week, I was able to build trust and empathy among a few of the boys and have some meaningful conversations about their past and their hopeful futures.
Having the opportunity to work with Eagle Ranch at Snowbird really put a passion in my heart to work with students and helping them navigate through adolescence. Having the opportunity to attend Snowbird as a camper helped me understand my faith and expressibility as a teenager, and I am thankful to be able to give back what was given to me.
