I had been contributing to the Sandy Hook Promise Foundation for several years, and I had read about SHP Promise Leaders and what they did to support their communities, but it was an op-ed written by a former law enforcement officer in which he described what an AR-15 style rife could do that was my call to action. As I sat in the safety of my living room, I couldn't imagine what it would be like being in a room with an armed assailant, knowing that my next breath could be my last. That op-ed was my call.to action.
The next day I completed the online application to become a Promise Leader. My application was accepted, and after completing the SHP Promise Leader training, I began my work advocating for responsible gun safety legislation and educating people, including friends and family members, in my community about suicide prevention, inclusion and diversity programs what signs to be aware of that might indicate someone might be getting ready in to harm themselves or someone else.
As a Promise Leader I have also had the opportunity to meet with local community school and law enforcement officials as well as my state representative and state senator. I try to educate them about SHP and what SHP can do to help address issues of gun safety and gun violence in the community.
Becoming a Promise Leader has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. I am proud to be a part of a nationwide group of people who believe as I do,that we must stop the epidemic of gun violence in our country and in our communities. It is a challenge, but one I accept every day.
