After becoming paralyzed, I semi-accepted that piloting is off limits for me. I put this nonsense idea to rest this summer, as I went through Able Flight Training and became a licensed pilot. I spent seven very challenging, yet very rewarding weeks with SIU School of Aviation in Carbondale, IL, learning to operate brand new Vashon Rangers guided by dedicated SIU stuff. Flying solo for the first time made me feel like if I can do this I can do anything. I absolutely loved the environment I was in: I met with the faculty, mechanics, and other students, toured the airport tower, mechanics shop, flew simulators. The experience boosted my self-confidence, gave better understanding of aviation in general, and helped me to meet new people.
