Review for Katal Center For Equity, Health, and Justice, Middletown, CT, USA
This summer, I interned for the Katal Center for Equity, Health, and Justice and had a wonderful experience as I was able to absorb so many organizing skills and deeply develop them, gaining much confidence and my ability. Organizing for Katal's #ShutRikers campaign, my experiences included canvassing across the city with knocking on thousands of doors and talking to community members about our campaign, as well as leaving thousands of door hangers in communities with information about the campaign, phone banking to reach out to constituents of multiple city council districts about the campaign, tabling at libraries across the city, and connecting with various youth organizers and representatives through one-on-ones. These skills were also further expanded on and discussed in wider team meetings (including the team operating in Connecticut!) on a regular basis. As a college student at Wesleyan University who has been immersed in student organizing in a rather quick matter, largely starting to organize this past spring semester, Katal's New York team has been incredibly supportive and encouraging of my development as an organizer and my intentions to take these abilities I've acquired to my campus in the fall for my student organizing to be more effective than ever, and the team and I are sure that the relationships we've cultivated as team members and organizers will continue to go on well into the future.
