Review for Grist Magazine, Inc., Seattle, WA, USA

Rating: 2 stars

As we now see in the Mid East and Wisconsin, misuse of power can only be fought by exposing what is going on by informing the public. The media clearly failed to do so and it was the internet that informed the public and initiated the action we now witness. Mainstream media clearly has been filtering the news in order to keep the public in the dark in support of those in power.
Starting my attempts to correct an essential water pollution test in 1981, when the internet did not exist yet, the media ignored this fact, even tough this test caused the failure of the Clean Water Act, as EPA, by using this test incorrectly, ignored all the pollution caused by nitrogenous (urine and protein) waste in sewage. This, while this waste besides exerting an oxygen demand (like fecal waste) also is a fertilizer for algae, thus contributes to eutrophication often causing dead zones, a phenomenon now acknowledged but mainly blamed on storm water runoffs and runoffs from farms.

Admitted, this is a technical issue apparently too difficult for journalist in the mainstream media to comprehend, but with the new online media, such as grist specifically focused on environmental issues, one would have expected that such an issue would be immediately addressed, even tough it would go against the interest of the established authorities and consequently may result in less advertisement revenues from established business that sadly always prefer the status quo.

The question now is, will Grist Magazine be a new voice in how the general public is informed or will it become an extension of the old media?

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Actually no result as issues was and still is ignored.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

insist in real journalism, i.e. investigating controversial environmental issues.

Role:  Professional with expertise in this field & testify before Congress, Sued EPA.
