In June of 2024 I was invited to Volunteer Day at The Elephant Sanctuary. The visit far exceeded my expectations. It wasn’t a visit where we were just escorted around and shown some of the memorable features of The Sanctuary. Helping with some of the everyday chores (weeding, painting, cleaning a hay trailer, clipping bamboo) enabled us to see the day to day operation of what it takes to house and care for these majestic creatures.
I can honestly say, although the elephants there were unlucky (circus performers or in zoos) until they landed at The Sanctuary…they are very lucky now! There is so much space for the elephants to roam and explore. They have the companionship of other elephants, and their wonderful human caregivers. Their barns are spacious and clean and well kept. They are treated with the respect and attention that they deserve…and many didn’t get in their “before” life.
Although we did see some of the Sanctuary elephants, we were kept at a safe distance both for ourselves and the elephants. We learned not only about the Sanctuary’s work to further the understanding of elephant behavior, but also of their global connections with other elephant sanctuaries and the study of elephants in the wild.
Overall, a definite 5 star experience for a 5 star nonprofit!
