I have been a Rolling Reader volunteer for nine years and I’ve worked in four different Brevard County schools in grades Kindergarten through Third Grade. It is widely known that elementary school children gain so much by being read to. Books entertain them, educate them, and get them thinking. During the thirty minute reading time the kids do much more than passively listen to a grownup reading them a story; instead, they actively participate by asking questions and discussing characters, plot, vocabulary, and themes. They are encouraged to talk about what they think is happening in the story and they are challenged to guess what might happen on the next page or in the next chapter. Rolling Readers Space Coast is a low cost but high impact program, and I hope it is funded for many years to come.
