My experience with A Touch of Understanding is from a unique perspective. My daughter volunteers with ATOU by sharing her story as a young woman navigating life with a neurological disorder. She finds purpose in connecting with the young people by sharing photos of the things that are dear to her and also the challenges that she has overcome through her life journey. She has grown more confident in who she is through speaking and answering the thoughtful questions the students have. She was asked by a 3rd grader, "have you ever thought of your disability as a gift"? My daughter had never thought of it as a gift but now, she does. ATOU's mission is to teach empathy but in doing so, they are also giving people with disabilities an opportunity to share their gift. Thank you ATOU.
