Review for The Roberto Clemente Health Clinic, Baltimore, MD, USA
I am so grateful for my experience at the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic in Tola, Nicaragua. I was fortunate enough to volunteer here for 4 weeks – and hope to return for a longer period in the future. As a pre-PA student, working with the Roberto Clemente Clinic has given me an invaluable experience seeing how they handle providing medical care in a largely underserved area. I have always known that I wanted to pursue a career helping people, and seeing just how much they do for their community has given me even more inspiration. Not only is this clinic responsible for bridging the gap in available healthcare and emergency attention in the region, but they also tirelessly treat and deliver clean water to local schools and other health clinics, educate local families in organic farming by helping them harvest their very own plot for fresh produce, and they help sponsor local children by providing means and pathway for education and mentorships. The impact that this clinic is making on the community has left me in complete awe.
Beyond this, Enmanuel (the volunteer coordinator) and Dr. Ruiz (the clinic’s medical director) cared so much about my experience and made sure I got the most I could out of every day that I was there. My daily schedule consisted of; shadowing and learning from the clinic’s knowledgeable doctors, assisting in the pharmacy, and when emergencies came up, I was able to go on calls with the clinic’s wonderful EMT staff. I got to help their agricultural expert at the community farm, Los Cocos, and see firsthand the effort that this organization makes to provide local families with healthy food options, as well as spend an afternoon extracting honey from some of their bee boxes! On my last day, the doctors trained me on several suturing techniques before hosting a farewell lunch of the delicious Nicaraguan dish Vigarón!
My experience with Roberto Clemente Health Clinic has been so incredible. It has touched my heart in so many ways, from the warm and welcoming team who I will truly miss, to the invaluable care that the organization provides for this beautiful community. I would recommend that anybody interested in volunteering to come here, as you will not regret it. I, for one, can’t wait to return!
