Review for OLASTEO, Los Angeles, CA, USA
I was lucky enough to have been chosen to go on the 2023 DMV trip with OLASTEO and it was life changing. Prior to going on the excursion with OLASTEO I had never been to the east coast. I didn’t really know what to expect but i was very excited for the trip. Just flying into DC was an incredible sight, viewing how green DC is was so beautiful. Our first day there we went to the artechouse and it was amazing, i loved how interactive it was. The next day we went to Howard which had a gorgeous campus. Next we went to the Capitol and it was fascinating being able to see US history both past and present. After that we went to the National Museum of the American Indian and it was so eye opening. I went in knowing that American Indians had been very mistreated throughout US history but this showed the true extent of it. The next day was my favorite. We started off the day by going to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. There were so many floors i could get to but going through each one and learning the history was captivating. After that we went to planet word which was super fun and i was so excited when they had a little display of my favorite book, The Phantom Tollbooth. It may have been a very small part of the trip but it hit very close to my heart. But our day wasn’t over yet, we still had to go to the Mexican Cultural Institute. My moms side of the family is from Oaxaca and they had some art commemorating the history and culture of Oaxaca which was incredible because i’ve never been able to visit. We then ate dinner at Union Market where i had the best strawberry milk boba of my life and went on a bus where we did a nighttime monument tour which i can now look back on with more knowledge that i’m taking US History. On our 4th day we took a tour of Georgetown which had the most beautiful main building i’ve ever seen. After that we went to the Holocaust Memorial Museum which was heartbreaking. It was so sad to see the atrocities that occurred during the holocaust but was very informative and i’m thankful i went. After that we got ready for dinner at the Bazaar which was probably the best dinner of my life. We had a bunch of appetizers, one of which i got to try Wagyu beef for the first time and some delicious chicken wings. Our main course was pork which was so good it tasted like beef which i still can’t get over. Once we finished there we walked over to the museum of illusions which was so trippy but a ton of fun. Then was our last day, i was very sad but we still had some exciting things to get to. We started off the day at the spy museum, it was huge but so cool. After that we got to have lunch with Joan Trumpauer Mulholland. It was an honor to have been in her presence and to have been able to ask her questions about her life of activism. Unfortunately after we finished eating our trip we over. But i am so happy that i was able to apply and got accepted. It was truly a life changing experience that i will forever be grateful for. Please continue donating to OLASTEO to help other students have these experiences for many years to come.
