I was a volunteer at the Clinica Roberto Clemente at the end of 2023. As a surgical resident in my home country I wanted to gain new experiences in hospitals around the world and do volunteer work, so I chose this clinic in Nicaragua. In total I had a great time!
Attending the program was uncomplicated. First you get in touch with the organisation and hand in the required documents. After that, a member of the stuff (Emanuel, english speaking, communication was easy) answers all of your questions and coordinates your daily-schedule regarding to your area of interests while volunteering. For me it was medical attention and the pharmacy area. Plus theory and practical suture training for the medical stuff. My spanish is not good, but it was no problem. Some of the doctors speak english, in other cases there was a translator. I learned about different diseases and their treatment. The stuff was very friendly and besides the clinical experience I also had the chance to learn more about the (food-) culture and the way of life in Nicaragua. I appreciated the open-minded people.
After your day at the clinic you can spend the evening at the beach with some great surf spots and sunsets.
All in all I recommend the volunteer program at the Clinica Roberto Clemente. Thank you for having me.
