Our family has been boarders for Dogs on Deployment since 2019. In the last 4 years, we’ve watched 5 different dogs for 4 different Military members. We have a unique situation and live on a small farm with 4 dogs of our own, 3 of which are working dogs. We have the joy of watching city dogs become farm dogs, or at the very least take a vacation in the country. Although there have been challenges along the way, we have immensely enjoyed helping out our country’s Service Members while they are deployed. They and their pets become friends and family to us. We have watched the same dog more than once as we love to see them again.
Dogs on Deployment is a vital way to give back. Often times service members have long distance relationships with their families and outside of the military very little support. I have spoken with an Army member whose pet tragically died from overheating, when they left it in the care of unknowledgeable extended-family because they thought they had no other options. My heart just broke for them. They had never heard of Dogs on Deployment. It is not exaggeration to say that Dogs on Deployment saves lives. Not only by keeping beloved pets in safe environments, but also by preventing Military members from having to make the difficult decision to surrender their pets to over crowded shelters.
