I've been a donor for 12 years, but this year was the first time I was able to volunteer on-site to help maintain the Sanctuary and prepare enrichment toys for the elephants. It was a wonderful chance to see, up close, how well treated these elegant beasts are treated and taken care of and loved on a property that is designed for wonderful healthcare, companionship, and to allow the elephants to live out their best lives in beautiful surroundings. We moved bales of hay, cut down and covered up banana plants that had faltered after the first frost, cut down bamboo stalks for the elephants' enjoyment, and made those toys. It was a great day - rewarding, fulfilling, and a super way to see how well my donations are being used. And we also got a chance to meet and work side-by-side with several Sanctuary staff who, to a person, were warm, engaging, interested, interesting, and clearly in love with their jobs.
