Review for The Jazz Gallery, New York, NY, USA

Rating: 5 stars

As a jazz journalist who has followed developments in New York for over thirty years, I can honestly say that jazz would not sound the way it does today had not the Jazz Gallery served as a locus for NYC's polyglot musical community to exchange ideas and work on moving to the next step. The programming is innovative --- a la, Steve Coleman's ongoing Monday night workshop series, regular appearances by artists as diverse as Roy Hargrove, Henry Threadgill, Miguel Zenon, Vijay Iyer, and many more. The curatorial decisions (a la the various commissions, sponsored collaborations, and events like September's Ornette Coleman Festival) are spot-on.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Going to concerts, and talking with artists who perform at the Jazz Gallery.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

They're doing a great job -- don't need my input on this subject.

Role:  Professional with expertise in this field & I write feature articles on jazz musicians for several magazines and websites, and broadcast jazz and creative music in NYC feor 23 years.
