Review for Able Flight, Chapel Hill, NC, USA
Able Flight is a program that teaches individuals with disabilities to fly. The program allows people with lower leg impairments, such as arthritis, amputations, paraplegia and quadriplegia to learn to fly in a light sport aircraft, specially configured with the rudder controls, normally operated with the feet, operated with the hands. At present, the academy is predominantly using a Sky Arrow, an airplane which comes from the factory with a disability package already installed. The Able Flight program offers students a scholarship which covers the cost of training, which normally may be financially out of reach for many. The goal is ultimately to get more disabled individuals interested in aviation as a career. Once the aviation bug gets in you, students may opt to further their career into commercial aviation, air traffic control, teaching, aviation design, engineering or mechanics. There are many paths one might consider once you get a foot, or a hand, in the door. Able Flight is the only aviation school of its kind in the United States. For those of us that are wheelchair bound, you can find yourself going faster than you ever thought possible.
