I have volunteered with the AIWR for 2 years as a mentor, and also as a teacher of a course in Legal English for Afghan women granted asylum in 3 countries. The depth of commitment that AIWR staff show to the women they serve and to the volunteers who participate in their programs is impressive and inspiring. There are so many challenges for the mentees, who are lawyers and judges with a background in human rights work and are now trying to build new lives for themselves. The one-to-one structure of the mentoring program means that each of the mentees literally gets personal attention from someone who is a peer and can offer both personal and professional support. It is such a smart, compassionate, and practical program! I am proud to be associated with it.
