Review for U.S.VETS, Los Angeles, CA, USA

Rating: 1 stars

My poor brother was staying here. I was assured that he was safe here temporarily until we found him suitable housing. He moved here from Vegas but didn't have his own place yet.

My brother has his own money. He also has me. But he also has some mental health issues. He's not the least bit aggressive. He's always happy and cheery and trying to spread love.

If you were in need; he would give the shirt off of his back and the shoes from his feet.

I am not familiar with the VA system, but I was trusting that they would look out for their own.

They put my brother on a 12-step program. I didn't understand why. He doesn't do drugs and he doesn't drink, but I'm like...okay.

They said once he's done, they'll get him affordable VA housing. I'm thinking great! Rent is crazy in LA, any help would be great!

My brother had been there for several weeks. He had complained that there were unsavory types there that did meth and other kinds of drugs. They would physically threaten him, steal his clothing, urinate on his personal belongings.

Staff wouldn't corroborate his story, so I didn't know what to think.

Yes my brother is schizophrenic, but he doesn't make stuff like this up. His schizophrenia has to do with higher spirituality, and doing God's work. But US Vets had me doubting him.

We talked to VA social worker about 2-3 weeks ago, as well as the director at VA. My brother was afraid for his safety, but because he was a part of 12 step program at US Vets, they wouldn't allow him to switch to another facility were he felt safer.

Five times in 2 months or so, he's said someone physically harmed him, but US Vets did nothing about it.

Well, yesterday...a new guy was placed in my brother's room. It's a very cramped room with two twin beds with maybe two feet of space in between the beds.

My brother has a lot of stuff. He was trying to go through his things and make space. In the process, he bumped the guy's bed. He apologized, but the guy became very aggressive and physical. My brother tried to diffuse, "it's okay, brother. It's ok chill. Calm down. Please stop. I'm sorry, it was an accident."

Well, this new guy was here for three days, and in those three days, my brother had said four altercations occurred to which US Vets did nothing.

Even when this happened they didn't call to tell me anything. I'm his emergency contact. His social worker didn't call me. She put him on the phone to call me. I knew something was wrong. He could barely speak. He was so muffled.

This call happened shortly before 9am this morning 10/04/23. My brother said his roommate beat him up real bad last night and he needs surgery.

Guys...look at my poor sweet brother. The guy could have killed him! This shouldn't have happened under the trust and guardianship ship of the US Vets staff and social workers. This is absolutely crazy!!!

I had no idea. I'm so sorry I doubted my brother. It took fractured cheekbones, possibly occipital bones, broken nose, broken tooth for me to see he wasn't lying -- US Vet staff was.

I have no idea the name of the guy who assaulted my brother, but I will be making sure a police report was made on my brother's behalf - charges are pressed, and US Vets and staff will be held accountable.
