Maya Educational Foundation has been supporting scholarships in the community of Cajola in Guatemala, since 2006. Scholarships are an important strategy the youth have in Cajola as a way to avoid migrating. 40% of their community has migrated to the US leaving behind social disintegration. Knowing MEF is supporting them makes it possible to extend scholarships to more youth. This has also made it possible to change the "facts on the ground" -- only 3 people in the entire community of 18,000 people had a college degree in 2005, Grupo Cajola alone has added 21 professionals to that statistic.
