Recently, I had a nice visit to RDT Hospital at Bathalapalli, Anantapur district, India (affiliated with Vicente Ferrer Foundation USA). They’re doing such an amazing work, helping the poorest of the poor and providing medical care to some of the most underserved people in one of the poorest areas of India. They are providing high-quality care with great outcomes. For example, organophosphorus pesticide poisoning used to be a common way of committing suicide in rural parts of India when I was in medical school in the 1980s and 90’s. For these poisonings, there is a relatively cheap and effective antidote called Atropine. Nowadays, unfortunately, many, especially young women are attempting suicide by drinking hair dye which has no antidote. The mortality in this population used to be very high, but now I was told that they’re able to bring down the mortality significantly with effective supportive management at RDT Hospital.
