When my husband first started exhibiting symptoms of dementia, I had no idea what was going on. It came on fast and was so out of the blue, that I couldn't fathom what was wrong. He'd been failing physically and we'd had everything checked--bloodwork, x-rays, scans, etc.--but everything came back normal. When the mental confusion/delusions started, I had no idea how to deal with it. Luckily I joined the Memory Matters online support group, and they literally saved my life. My husband threatened me once when I tried to reason with him about his delusions. That, of course, did absolutely no good at all. What I learned from the others in the MM group was invaluable. From then on, I was able to step into my husband's tormented reality and help ease him out of it. I learned a ton in a very short time, and I'm very sure I could not have come up to speed as quickly without the group. For anyone facing dementia, or even the prospect of it, I recommend Memory Matters. Knowledge will get you through when nothing else will.
