This is my twelfth year partnering with GetLit and what I am most inspired by is the personal and professional growth it offers for students. There are weekend classes and open mics and trips to Washington DC and New York. There are leadership opportunities and performance opportunities and work experience. All of this provides space for kids to realize that their voices matter. GetLit brings unique value to the promotion of literacy. Classrooms all over the county, the state, the country and now the world can play with classic and original poetry! With UNI(VERSE) young poets have the ability to share their work with anyone out there and get vital feedback on the effect their writing choices have on diverse audiences. This kind of relationship between writer and audience is rare and, for younger writers, it is invaluable in learning about what works in the work.
This year I had a guest teacher from GetLit visit my classes. He happened to be my student 14 years ago. He is the best example of the transformative power of GetLit. They take a young person who has already been shaped by negative circumstances and they give him a pen and a microphone and the result is pure light. Then we all see everything more clearly.
