13 years ago a fellow Combat Controller named Danny Sanchez was killed in combat. His family has hosted an annual 5k in his memory, every year in El Paso TX. Hundreds of family and friends gather for the run and to spend time together and we feel it is especially important that we and other comrades of Danny be there to share stories and spend time with the family. This year was tough because of busy work schedules but VAC was able to fly us to El Paso early on the day of the event and get us back to home station before the day was done. This means everything to us and the family to be there on that day. As a Purple Heart recipient and guy who’s lost far too many brothers, I know first hand the devastating effects on the family and so thanks to VAC, 4 other comrades and I were able to be there this year.
