Review for Children's Cancer Connection, Johnston, IA, USA
My sister is a childhood cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 2. My entire family was served by Children's Cancer Connection via in-clinic programs, helpful resources and no-cost outings at which we met other families like ours. My sister spent years going to Oncology Camp for free, and met so many lifelong friends. My brother did the same at Sibling Camp. I was quite a bit older than my siblings, so I never attended Camp Heart Connection as a camper. I've been involved over the years as a volunteer, donor and staff member at CCC. What I've seen in my various roles is that CCC creates opportunities and environments for strangers to come together and almost instantly become lifelong friends - almost like a family. The unique programs and resources are also provided free of charge to participants. My family was low-income to begin with, so amid loss of jobs during treatment and medical/travel expenses, knowing that free programs were there for us was extra meaningful.
