Review for Literacy Network, Madison, WI, USA
I have been a personal tutor at Literacy Network for 5 years, tutoring both native English speakers who want to improve their literacy skills, as well as students learning English as a second language. It has continued to be a rewarding and meaningful experience , and I'm impressed by the perseverance of students from all backgrounds as they juggle the demands of family, jobs, school and learning challenges. While I do not have a teaching background, the support and guidance provided by staff has made all the difference. Volunteers are given individualized learning plans that respect the strengths, needs and differences of each student so that they can make meaningful progress towards their goals. These free English classes (as well as classes for GED/HSED and citizenship) have an enormous impact, not just on the student but on the learner's family and community. I have also become a Board member and can see the behind the scenes dedication of the staff and the way this organization truly lives up to its mission.
Review for Literacy Network, Madison, WI, USA
I have been a tutor for the Literacy Network since 2019 in both the Essentials (for native speakers) and ESL programs (for people learning English). The perseverance of the students, who face enormous challenges, is truly inspiring and it's enormously gratifying to play a part in helping students make progress towards their goals.
Initially I was nervous about volunteering as I don't have a teaching background. However, the Literacy Network provides me with weekly individualized lesson plans and a multitude of resources. The staff are very responsive and are there to support both the student and me whenever we face challenges or have questions. I never feel alone and always feel appreciated. I cannot say enough positives about the Literacy Network, it's mission and staff. It really makes a difference in our community.
