My children participated in the Northwest Family Services (NWFS) 2023 “Capture Your Voice” summer camp. The free camp lasted five weeks and focused on photovoice and advocacy. The kids were taken on various field trips, including a visit to the Portland Art Museum and the Willamette Jet Boat Excursion. At the end of camp, the kids had a photo exhibit where they showed parents the photos they had taken and other art projects and how they related to advocacy issues that are important to them.
Another experience the camp provided was an opportunity for the camp kids to present to the Happy Valley City Council on the “Impact of Flavored Tobacco on Youth.” Youth speakers shared statistics on flavored tobacco’s impact on youth and shared their photos of the retail environment depicting how the tobacco industry targets youth. Following the presentations, the kids answered questions from the councilors and received praise for their eye-opening and informative presentation.
Overall, the camp was an educational and fun experience! Thank you, NWFS staff!
