The school programs STW’s offer are not “one and done”, they build upon the natural curiosity of children; helping students understand the concerns, connections and how they have an important role in protecting the natural world we all share.
I’ve been an educator for many years, promoting stewardship of our earth, both with students and the public. Along the way I’ve learned the importance of engaging your audience, with an experience, a thoughtful question that generates a meaningful dialogue and/or connection before delivering the critical message or “take home”.
My experiences with “Save the Whales” in both student and public outreach has included all of the above and more! After all what could be more compelling than sitting inside a life size whale learning about the impacts of plastic pollution, as well as the critical contributions and balance they bring to the marine eco-system they are part of, or visiting the Monterey Bay, perhaps for the first time, and learning from a marine biologist or a passionate university student intern all about marine animals and their habitats, how to protect the snowy plover, use binoculars or sample and test water? I’ve seen so many “ah-ha” moments during the experiential learning STW offers to children and adults alike…I look forward to many more!
