I´ve just finished a two month stay with the Roberto Clemente Health Clinic and have had an incredible time. The clinic staff was incredibly accomidating to my level of qualification and goals as an American premedical student, allowing me to shadow the doctors during patient visits and help hands on with the clinic´s numerous community service initatives -- their water purification and delivery program, their organic garden, and the new weekly free pop-up clinics that they host in remote neighboring communities. Beyond enjoying all of these roles, the clinic enviroment has helped me majorly improve my spanish speaking after years of not taking classes! Knowledge of the language is certainly not required, but it sure does help. Being here has helped me gain a passion for finding ways that access to care can transcend language barriers, both in Nicaragua and my home of the US. The clinic´s primary focus is preventative care, a goal that strongly ties together all of their initiatives.Through delivering resources, education, and healthcare to the surounding community, the clinic has built an incredibly positive relationship with those that they serve. I cannot be more thankful to the clinic staff for welcoming me in with open arms and designing a program in which I was able to learn from the doctors and nurses while also helping with their ongoing service projects. I highly recomend that any professionals or students interested in healthcare volunteer at The Roberto Clemente Health Clinic -- you will have an incredible time.
