I have kept pet rats and appreciated their intelligence, but APOPO has harnessed their ability to seek out landmines in many countries where they have been a threat for decades. Now these courageous little creatures and their handlers are going to Ukraine. APOPO acts where others just talk about what "should" be done. They train the Giant African Pouched Rats carefully from a young age to detect the mines, which can't harm them as they are too light to trigger the explosives. I always enjoy reading the stories and pictures posted by APOPO on Facebook.
