My Nonprofit Reviews

This January I fell over 100' of cliffs while skiing a high consequence line in the Lake Tahoe backcountry. After breaking my L1-L4 and 3 ribs which punctured my left lung, tearing open my low back and hamstring, in addition to blowing up my ACL, I need a lot of help in my recovery journey. You can learn more about my accident here: https://www.tiktok.com/@sammyaucella/video/7211668808518520110
I am forever grateful for the Empowerment Grant which will help fund my expensive and extensive recovery. SCI injuries are no joke, and it will take a lot (and a lot of help) to come back from this experience. As a private contractor and photographer, I was unable to work for 4 months and it continues to take a toll on my body. Paying for expensive medical bills while unable to work has been a challenge. As times I felt helpless and frustrated that I could not fund my healing journey like I desperately need. High Fives has helped ease some of this burden and I feel so much more optimistic for my future and return to sport. Not only that but I feel supported by the team far beyond the monetary benefit. It is clear that they are invested in my healing journey and I am so grateful I don't have to go at this alone.
As a Lake Tahoe native, I was skiing for the Sugar Bowl Ski Team back when founder Roy Tuscany was a freeride coach and had his accident. From afar I witnessed how he grew High Fives into what it is today, and although I hoped to never have to lean on this amazing team for support, I cannot thank High Fives enough for being here and for all that they do - my gratitude is more potent now more than ever. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
