I first began serving with the Shepherd's Center in 1973. I was asked to teach a course of Personal and Spiritual Growth. In teaching this class, my whole experience and understanding of working with older adults was transformed. At the heart of the Shepherd's Center mission are the keysand best practice of older adults serving older adults through this national network of Centers - "BY, FOR, AND WITH".
I observed that the first Shepherd's Center was changing the Kansas City area for the best! I was a young Pastor in 1973 and I was amazed by the talent, energy, wisdom, and significant leadership of the Shepherd's Centers volunteer participants and leaders!
I now find this observation valid today (50 years later). The older adult generation can continue to make a difference with a life of service with joy! You might say that the Shepherd's Centers across America demonstrate a proven experiment.
