In my younger days I worked at summer camps for disabled children and adults, so when I was introduced to A Touch of Understanding in September 2022, it struck a chord. I volunteered at the workshops throughout most of the 2022-23 school year and plan to continue.

What is special about this program is the focus on exposing elementary school kids to disabilities, not by preaching to them, but by letting them see, feel, and hear with their own senses what our disabled friends experience every day. And the speakers bring it all home with their matter-of-fact discussions of how they adapt to live ordinary lives. It is just plain compelling and magical to watch these kids absorb this information; it will impact how they relate to people going forward.
