Review for One Heart Bulgaria, Woods Cross, UT, USA
I had a wonderful experience with the One Heart Bulgaria nonprofit organization. When my brother and I got in the country, the local program director drove us to the city we would be serving in, and met with the mayor and the director of the orphanage with us. He helped us get established in the orphanage, and periodically checked in with us to make sure that all was well. We were very well taken care of while we were in Bulgaria. The service that we were able to provide was heartwarming. The kids in the orphanage that we stayed in were relatively well taken care of. That is, their physical needs were met. However, with seventy children and five staff, there is no way for them to get the attention and emotional support that they need to mature healthily. As we spent time listening to and playing with the orphans, we were able to see the effect of our service. The kids opened up and began caring more for each other than before. It was comforting to see this change take place in the short time that we were with them.
More Feedback
I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...
the positive effect that I was able to have on the children in the orphanage, both by playing with them and by providing a positive role model for them to follow.
If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...
Organize specific activities for the volunteers to engage the children in and provide the volunteers with a list of ideas for additional activities and some possible programs to implement in the orphanage.
What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...
the kind of service provided. There is a unique feeling that you get when you spend an extended period of time caring for underprivileged children.
The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...
very helpful and friendly. We were well taken care of in Bulgaria, and we were assigned to an orphanage with very friendly staff.
If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...
greatly improve the lives of the children in the 144 orphanages throughout Bulgaria. The kids don't ask for much, but some better conditions and more staff to aid them would do wonders for their emotional stability.
Ways to make it better...
there had been more organized events and ideas for us to implement in the orphanage.
In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...
the limited number of volunteers available.
One thing I'd also say is that...
perhaps if there were people in Bulgaria willing to translate for volunteers that don't speak the language, there would be more people willing to help.
